5| Dinner

Jessica used some of her flex time the next day to go in early so she could leave early and do grocery shopping. After thinking through past conversations with Kyle, she decided that either enchiladas or steaks should be the menu tonight. Enchiladas won out because she could put them together, throw them in the oven and have the rest of the time to make herself gorgeous.

When she arrived home, she dashed through the kitchen and to the front door to see if her overpriced indulgence had arrived. On the wrought iron table on her patio sat a rectangular FedEx package. She giggled thinking about the contents inside.

She wanted Kyle to have an easy time entering her house since it seemed difficult for him to overcome. When he'd dropped her off at her house after the meteor shower, she could sense him pulling away again. She needed to keep it light—a little bit sexy, a little bit silly. Hopefully she could pull it off.

She walked back into her house across hardwood flooring and tossed the package onto a plush navy blue couch. She had two matching loveseats on either side of the sofa with a large rug of a nebula in the center. She flipped on the gas fireplace on the back of the wall. Her ceiling was high with windows at the top letting in light, but when night fell, the glow from the fireplace would be the only light in the room.

It took about forty-five minutes to prepare the enchilada casserole followed by a salad and some homemade salsa. She cleaned up the kitchen and set out a scarlet tablecloth on the small square table in the dining area next to the kitchen. Maybe a couple of candles—no, all of hers were scented. At least she could dim the light above the table.

After the food situation was taken care of, she snatched the package off the couch and went back to her bedroom to take care of herself. She'd remembered to make her bed that morning and threw the box onto the teal comforter spread across her bed. She had an eclectic collection of photos on the wall from stars to sunsets against the mountains. She'd taken them all herself but never showed anyone.

She'd considered taking the photos down for fear he'd ask about them, but he was opening himself up to her by coming to her house. She should do the same for him. And then the next time they watched a meteor shower, she could take her camera.

Usually, she kept her appearance simple, but tonight she shaved in all the extra places she normally let go, took a straight iron to her hair so there was no chance of it kinking up like it sometimes did, and painted her nails crimson with gold glitter.

At last she opened the package and unfolded a black apron with a lace trim. It had a crimson sash around the middle and crimson ties at the neck. She took a deep breath.
